Former Playboy Playmate Jenny McCarthy said she “completely surrendered” to Jesus following the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, describing the tragedy as a turning point in her faith.
The 53-year-old actor and television personality, who was named Playboy's "Playmate of the Year" in 1994, discussed her beliefs during a Dec. 11 appearance on the “Culture Apothecary” podcast, where she told host Alex Clark she now has “a very deep relationship with God.”
“Some people have to work really hard to hear him,” McCarthy, who was raised Catholic, said. “I’ve got a direct line. I mean, Jesus is my homie.”
Although McCarthy said she has “always been a follower of Christ,” she explained that Kirk’s assassination in September caused her to become “so devoted” to Jesus.
McCarthy said she became a parental-rights activist after her son was diagnosed with autism. She said that while researching the condition and reading that some children could recover, she felt “the most godly energy” and discovered what she described as “my purpose.” After praying for her son’s healing, she said she promised God, “I will teach the world how I did it, but lead me there.”
Though she lost work because of her anti-vaccine views, she credited God with continuing to provide for her and her son. She said the backlash she experienced contributed to conservatives and others who supported her cause in Hollywood staying quiet.
She described embracing “conservative values” such as “questioning authority, less government control, [being] closer to God.”
Shortly after Kirk’s death, McCarthy shared a video of herself worshiping to Kari Jobe’s song “The Blessing.” Fighting back tears, she reflected on the loss.
“It was so sad because the work he was doing was so good,” she said. McCarthy added that it was unfortunate “a certain group of people … were fed only one narrative of Charlie.”
“If you know what Charlie was doing, you would know it was such a gift,” she said.
McCarthy said she could relate to Kirk because she also receives threats and has needed courage and the “armor of God” to continue speaking publicly.
After Kirk’s murder, she said, “I was so broken. I prayed and prayed and prayed, and then I was calling like every doctor I possibly could, saying, ‘Tell me that this wound is something that could be healed.’”
She said the tragedy reshaped her perspective.
“With every horrible thing, if you find the good, it can help you move forward,” McCarthy said. “Look at the mass awakening. Look at how many people came closer to God, even including myself.”
McCarthy said she “started Bible study immediately” following Kirk’s death and recommended the Duomo devotional app. She said she and her husband, actor Donnie Wahlberg, “have become devout since Charlie’s passing.”
When asked whether the couple attends church together, McCarthy said they currently “live in different countries because of work” but “attend different things.”
“I absolutely feel … like Charlie knew exactly what he was doing,” she said.
“I just want Charlie to know that — and I know he knows this, because he can see us all — he changed the world,” McCarthy said. “He saved the world. I mean, imagine having that as your legacy. … You brought all those people closer to Christ. … What a gift.”
CCM artist Chris Tomlin, who led worship at Kirk’s memorial service, previously told The Christian Post that following the TPUSA founder's death, he’s seen a spiritual awakening like never before.
“There’s a hunger I haven’t felt in a while,” the Grammy Award–winning worship leader said on the red carpet at the GMA Dove Awards in Nashville. “People are coming hungry, wanting to connect with God. There’s no playing games anymore. It feels like we’re in a real moment, an awakening.”
“I’ve been out on tour since the memorial, and I really haven’t stopped,” he said. “But every night, it feels like people aren’t coming for a show; they’re coming desperate to encounter God.
Tomlin told CP his band feels it too. “Every day we look at each other like, ‘OK, what’s God going to do tonight?’ because you can’t plan what’s happening. People are responding to God in beautiful, unexpected ways.”
