A decade after launching his comeback with a new ministry in Scottsdale, Arizona, called Trinity Church, Pastor Mark Driscoll, who is already attracting about 5,000 worshipers each service, is expanding into a new location.

“This is the moment. Since our beginning as a Bible study in 2016, the mission of Trinity Church has remained the same: We open our Bibles to learn. We open our lives to love. So that lives and legacies are transformed,” he recently announced on his church’s website. “God has richly blessed this mission, and our church family has completely outgrown our home. So we prayed, and God answered.”

He then explained in an accompanying video that “we’ve purchased a big building right off the Shea [Boulevard] and the [Loop] 101. Five times the parking, four times the square footage, three times the kids' space, two times the seating, all under one roof.”

According to the Scottsdale Progress, Trinity Church acquired the new property located at 10001 North 92nd St. on Jan. 5 for $15.5 million. The purchase included a $2,765,000 downpayment and a $12,735,000 loan financed by AG Financial Solutions, a mission-driven financial services group affiliated with the General Council of the Assemblies of God.

The two-story former office building, constructed in 1997, comes with 116,200 square feet of space and 378 parking spaces. It also housed a fitness center and conferencing facility, according to LoopNet.

In 2014, Driscoll made a controversial exit from the now-defunct Mars Hill Church in Seattle, Washington.

A year later, in 2015, he told Hillsong Church founder Brian Houston in a tearful video interview that even though he had not planned to resign from his church, God told him and his wife to resign because a trap had been set.

Driscoll was embroiled in a controversy concerning relational issues, including his domineering leadership style, his views on the role of women in the church, and old online comments.

"Our plan was to come back as volunteers. On that Monday night, I was in the bedroom, Grace was in the living room. He (God) spoke to me and He spoke to her in a supernatural way that neither of us anticipated or expected," Driscoll explained at the time.

"So Grace walked in and said, 'I feel like the Lord just said what we are supposed to do.' And I said, 'I feel like the Lord just spoke to me' … and it's not what we wanted," Driscoll noted, prefacing his comments with a hint of pain.

"It's not what we agreed to and it's not what we planned for. And so I asked her, 'What did the Lord say to you?' because I didn't want to influence her, and Grace interjected, saying at the time, 'We're released from Mars Hill.'"

"She said, 'Well, what did He say to you?' I said, 'the Lord revealed to me a trap has been set, there's no way for us to return to leadership.' And I didn't know what that meant or what was going on at the time. He said we're released and we need to resign."

In 2021, Driscoll would face similar criticism from former followers at Trinity Church who accused him of “immoral, unethical and unbiblical actions.” At the time, Driscoll did not respond to CP's requests for comment regarding those allegations.

While discussing his leadership style during an interview with Houston, Driscoll, who founded Mars Hill at the age of 25, admitted he made mistakes.

"I've made a lot of mistakes, and one of them was going too fast. There's the Lord's calling and then there's the Lord's timing," he said in the 2015 interview. "And I should have waited longer; I should have been under godly spiritual authority — for Grace and I to be under a godly couple that was senior pastor, so that we can learn and grow. My character was not caught up with my gifting and I did start too young."

He said after his exit from Mars Hill, he and his wife spent a lot of time with older, more experienced spiritual leaders and saw many ways in which he could improve the way he did ministry.

"I hope whatever the Lord has for me in the future is that I will draw people and not drive people,” he said. “My empathy level will increase.”
