Sarah Jakes Roberts, co-pastor of The Potter's House, has revealed she’s recovering from a serious neck injury that nearly left her paralyzed after she experienced a frightening accident while playing with her daughter.
In an Instagram post shared Sunday afternoon, the 36-year-old author and speaker said she “landed on [her] neck” while playing a game on a trampoline with her daughter, Ella, and immediately heard “several pops” in her neck.
“Last night was scary. I was almost paralyzed, but God didn’t see fit to let that be my story,” Roberts wrote alongside a photo of herself wearing a neck brace while lying in a hospital bed.
Roberts, who leads The Potter’s House alongside her husband, Touré Roberts, said her daughter alerted her father, who called 911. After being transported to two hospitals and undergoing multiple scans, doctors determined she had fractured her neck, suffered herniated discs and sustained injuries that endangered areas of her spine.
“Two hospitals, several scans, and hours later, we learned that I had fractured my neck, herniated discs, and endangered areas of my spine that could have left me paralyzed,” she wrote.
“One disc up or one disc lower, and this would’ve been a different testimony,” Roberts said, adding that she will wear a neck brace for four to six weeks to stabilize her injury and prevent further damage.
“Rest and recovery will give my body a chance to heal. I’ll be laying low while I navigate this injury with wisdom,” she wrote.
Roberts, the daughter of Bishop T.D. Jakes and head of the Woman Evolve movement, also reflected on her faith in the aftermath of the accident, saying she is “soaking in the presence and kindness of God” and leaning on the support of loved ones.
“I’m soaking in the presence and kindness of God and in the love of friends and family,” she wrote. “So, if you see me and I’m out and about, but moving slowly, just know that I’m still … even with a neck brace,” Roberts wrote.
Roberts and her husband were installed as co-senior pastors of The Potter’s House in July, months after Jakes announced the couple would be leading the Dallas-based megachurch.
“I cannot afford to let all the work of all the saints, living and dead, to hold this so tight so long that I wither away. So I'm suggesting to you, I'm recommending to you, that you receive Pastor Touré and Pastor Sarah,” he told his congregation in April. Founded in 1996 after Jakes moved to Dallas from West Virginia, The Potter’s House now reports a membership of about 30,000.
A bestselling author, Roberts has spoken openly about her struggles as a teen mother and daughter of a high-profile pastor.
“I was a teen mom, I've gone through a divorce, I dropped out of college,” she told The Christian Post in 2021. “These are all things I don't think were God's initial desire for my life. But, in my desire to restore those lives in my life and in my own strength, I thought I just needed to forget that they happened.”
“But the truth is,” she continued, “when we separate ourselves in that way, we miss out on the lessons that keep us from repeating those past behaviors. So what we were is so important for where we are now, because it teaches us how to show up in life better.”
