Authorities are investigating the ties two men accused of throwing homemade explosive devices at a crowd of protesters near the New York City mayor’s mansion over the weekend have with the Islamic State.

According to the federal criminal complaint, 18-year-old Emir Balat and 19-year-old Ibrahim Kayumi attempted to detonate two explosive devices on Saturday near the Gracie Mansion in Manhattan, New York, during a protest and counter-protest in the area.

Preliminary results of a test on one of the explosive devices indicate that it contained a quantity of triacetone triperoxide, which the complaint noted is “a highly volatile explosive material used in multiple terrorist attacks over the last decade.”

After the New York Police Department arrested the suspects at the scene, they both reportedly made statements referring to IS (a terror network also known as ISIS, ISIL, or Daesh).

Here are three things to know about the alleged terror plot in New York City and the suspects.
