“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” — James 1:22 (NIV)

Obedience sounds easy but proves to be much more difficult when it’s something you’d rather not do. I have no problem reading a book for fun, doing the dishes, or running for three miles. I’m obedient and don’t need much convincing. When God asks me to do something outside of my comfort zone, however, like wait on His timing, talk to the neighbor next door, or give grace to my husband for the 12th time this week, obedience becomes much more challenging.

According to Scripture, obedience requires us to listen, hear, and respond. We’re called to be obedient, but we’re not called to measure the success of the outcome. Our command is obedience; God promises that He will take care of the results.

When you read Scripture, does it quickly go in one ear and then out the other? I know I’ve certainly been there. But James 1:22 tells us that we must not merely listen to the Word, but actually do what it says. Let me give you a practical example.

If I want to lose 10 pounds, I can’t just think about losing the weight. No matter how much I think about cardio, eating healthy, and cutting back on sugar, it’s the action that will shed the pounds. We can think about Scripture the same way. Hearing the Word of God isn’t enough. We must also live it out.

The best part about God’s Word is that it’s alive and active. When we read it, it can move through us and into the world. We’re obedient, but God flourishes the effort. Friends, don’t just listen to the Word, but live it out. Do what it says. Listen and obey and choose to lead by example.

Question for Reflection:

Do you struggle to obey what God’s Word says? This week, try reading the Scriptures slowly. Instead of trying to speed your way through them, focus on what the passage means for your life in the here and now. It might take some extra digging, longer reading, or looking into some commentaries, but I promise it will be worth it. Then, commit to doing what the passage reveals and ask a friend or family member to keep you accountable.
