A shooter who opened fire at a group of people at Old Dominion University, injuring two in the process, has been confirmed dead, according to campus officials.
In an emergency alert issued Thursday morning, the Norfolk, Virginia-based university announced that there was “no longer a threat at Old Dominion University.”
“Please continue to avoid the area in and around Constant Hall where emergency personnel continue to work,” stated the alert, which was issued at 11:43 a.m. Eastern time.
At 10:48 a.m., ODU issued an alert noting that “a gunman in Constant Hall opened fire,” resulting in two people being injured. They were sent to a local hospital.
Norfolk authorities immediately responded to the shooting. The shooter was pronounced dead soon after. ODU officials did not list a cause of death for the shooter, nor did they give the identity of the individual.
ODU officials also announced that they had decided to cancel classes and other operations for the rest of the day.
The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives reportedly has personnel at the scene supporting the official response to the shooting, according to The Associated Press.
This is not the first time that the ODU campus has experienced a shooting in recent times.
In February 2025, two men, 18-year-old Delanio M. Vick and 20-year-old Timothy G. Williams, were shot while in a parking lot near the ODU Broderick Dining Commons.
Vick and Williams were transported to a nearby hospital, where both died of their wounds. According to authorities, neither man was a student or facility member at ODU.
